The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, provides a suite of standards for environmentally sustainable construction. The building received 37 points and meetings the qualification's for the Silver rating (33- 38 points). In part during the construction of the building 40 percent of the materials used came from regional sources. Also the materials used had a high recycled content and over 50 percent of scraped materials were not sent to landfills.
The building was designed to conserve water both inside and out. Throughout, ultra low-flow faucets and toilets are used to reduce water usage. On the exterior low maintenance and native plants are used to reduce erosion.
Building features
The Social Sciences building has many state of the art features. The building has 38 technology enhanced classrooms, a 300-seat auditorium, five research centers, five project centers, 120 faculty and department offices, and a café in the lobby. The auditorium and a digital cinema classroom use
high definition projectors and digital media players. The digital cinema classroom has tiered seating and digital audio.Along with over 120 faculty and department offices, the build has a full shower facility for people that use alternative means to commute to campus. If faculty, staff, or students bike to campus there are facilities to cleanup before class.
