The Uncanny Amazers are a group of fictional superheroes in the DC Comics universe appearing in the "Legion of Super-Heroes".

Fictional history

Xanthu is a rim world in the United Planets, meaning it is one of the furthest away and is the first line of defense for the U.P. against outside threats. The Uncanny Amazers were formed to protect Xanthu from possible invasion. Each Amazer is a native of Xanthu and they are considered media darlings to their people. Several prominent members of the Legion originally hail from the Amazers, including Star Boy and both Kid Quantums.

Kid Quantum is drafted by his world to join the fledging Legion of Super-Heroes. He is killed on his first mission due to his dependence on a device for powers. He is regarded with shame by Xanthu afterward. This motivates his younger sister to enhance her latent powers and join the Uncanny Amazers.

Xanthu elects to send Star Boy to replace Kid Quantum. He becomes a prolific member. Star Boy's status as a Legionnaire makes him so popular that Xanthu officials try to persuade him to rejoin the Amazers to boost Xanthu's public image. They elect to win Star Boy back by having the Amazers battle the Legion in a contest for Star Boy's membership. Despite rigging the competition, the Amazers are defeated and Star Boy remains a Legionnaire.

The Uncanny Amazers reappear during Mordru's attack on the United Planets. Xanthu spares a few of the heroes to aid the Legion and Workforce. Though the battle is won, the Amazers suffer. Atom'X is killed and Monstress 'defects' to the Legion. Atom'X would live on as thermonuclear energy. He too would go on to join the Legion as Wildfire.

Xanthu is invaded several more times. In one instance, depicted in Starman v2 #50, Star Boy returns with comrade Umbra to stop a spreading darkness from devouring Xanthu. They team with 20th century Starman Jack Knight. Star Boy and Monstress return another instance when communication with Xanthu cuts out prior to an assault. Xanthu is saved by the war-like Khunds. Xanthu sets up political ties with the Khunds, straining relationships with the United Planets and Kid Quantum II who elects to join the Legion.

The Amazers stood against Robotica when they invaded Xanthu in Legion Worlds #4. What remained of the Uncanny Amazers fled Xanthu with the rest of the survivors, later returning to help refertilize their world. The only remaining Amazers depicted by this storyline were Atmos and Insect Queen.

The Uncanny Amazers are exclusive to the postboot Legion continuity. They have not appeared in any other Legion iteration to date, including the present one depicted in volume 5 of "Legion of Super-Heroes". Members Atmos and Insect Queen had counterparts in the preboot continuity.

Members of the Uncanny Amazers

*Atmos (Marak Russen) -- Able to control matter on a molecular level, destroying and recreating it. Flight and super-strength.
*Atom'X (Randall Burroughs) -- Able to fire atomic energy blasts and fly. Killed by Mordru, revived as Drake Burroughs and joins the Legion.
*Insect Queen (Lonna Leing) -- Able to gain the abilities of various insects, usually by her lower body assuming the creature's form.
*Kid Quantum (James Cullen) -- Able to create stasis fields through use of a belt. Eventually joins the Legion and is killed.
*Kid Quantum (Jazmin Cullen) -- Able to create stasis and quantum fields. Eventually joins the Legion and elected their leader.
*Konk -- Able to detach her floating head from her body to spy on or headbutt others. It is said her head shrivels away after one hour unless it reattaches to Konk's body.
*Monstress (Candi Pyponte Le-Parc III) -- Super-strength and resilience, further augmented by rage. Eventually joins the Legion and is killed.
*Phrenologax Lad -- Presumed able to tap into usually unused parts of the human brain. His name was only established by creators outside the books.
*Star Boy (Thom Kallor) -- Able to make objects super-heavy. Eventually joins the Legion.
