Thomas MacDonald Waller (
January 1 ,1840 –January 24 ,1924 ) was an American politician andGovernor of Connecticut .Early life
Waller was born in
New York City onJanuary 1 ,1840 to Irish immigrant parents. His parents died before he turned eight. He was later adopted by aConnecticut merchant called Robert Waller. He graduated from Bartlett High School and then studied law. In 1861 he was admitted to the bar.Politics
Waller served in the Union army during the
American Civil War . He later became a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives. He served in the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1867, 1872, and 1876. He also served as Secretary of State Connecticut from 1870 to 1871. He was mayor of New London from 1873 to 1879.Waller became the
Governor of Connecticut in 1882. He ran unsuccessfully for re-election in 1884.Later life
After completing his term, he was appointed as consul-general to
London inEngland . He held that position from 1885 to 1889. He passed away onJanuary 24 ,1924 .Sources
