It is a busy intermediate terminus and transport interchange hub. The town of Liverpool on theGeorges River is one of the earliest settlements of the colony ofNew South Wales . Liverpool station is wheelchair accessible as it has a lift to all platforms, the T-Way bus terminus and a lift to the street. Platform 1 has a ramp to the street. This therefore qualifies Liverpool station for Easy Access.History
The station opened in
1856 and was an early terminus of the South linecite web|work=Nswrail.net| title=Main South Line|url=http://www.nswrail.net/lines/show.php?name=NSW:main_south| accessdate=26 April| accessyear=2007] . Immediately north of Liverpool station, a former branch line crossed theGeorges River and entered the Holsworthy military base. The pylons for the bridge over the river have been reused to provide a pedestrian walkway. In 1965, one person was killed and three were injured when a freight train collided with a stationary electric passenger train at Liverpool stationcite web| work=Emergency Management Australia | title=Liverpool, NSW: Train Crash | url=http://www.ema.gov.au/ema/emadisasters.nsf/54273a46a9c753b3ca256d0900180220/62c09a021342f308ca256d3300058214?OpenDocument| accessdate=30 December | accessyear=2006] . In 2000, the station underwent a major 'easy access' upgrade with the provision of passenger lifts to the platforms, a new passenger concourse, toilets and a refurbishment of the heritage building on the 'Up' platform. The station has three platforms. Platforms 1 and 2 serve the South and Cumberland lines, and platform 3 serves as a terminus for some Bankstown and Inner West line trains. Liverpool railway station has a busy bus station attached to it. This acts as a hub for buses serving the local area, and also as the terminus of the T-Way which provides bus services to Parramatta operating mostly on a dedicated bus roadway. The T-Way opened in 2003. A fourth platform is planned as part of the Clearways Project cite web|work=TIDC| title=Liverpool Fourth Platform Project|url=http://www.raillink.nsw.gov.au/SectionIndex.aspx?PageID=518| accessdate=26 April| accessyear=2007] .
