Wegelnburg Castle

Wegelnburg Castle is a castle ruin near Schoenau in the Palatinate Forest in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany near the boarder to France. Its location is on 572m height, making it the uppermost castle ruin in the Palatinate Forest.

The Castle was built in the 12th century, demolished in 1272 and reconstructed until 1330. The castle was destroyed in the War of the Grand Alliance in 1679.

It is located on and inside a sandstone rock in 368m height. Literally translated the name means Dragons Rock.It is unknown when the castle was built, but the keepers, the gents of Drachenstein were first documentally mentioned in 1209.
