Book of Negroes

The Book of Negroes is an important historical document which includes descriptions and information on those African Americans who escaped to the British during the Revolutionary War. The document was recorded in 1783 and is the only one which recorded Black Americans in a large, detailed scope of work [ [http://www.gov.ns.ca/nsarm/virtual/africanns/archives.asp?ID=29 Nova Scotia Archives & Records Management - African Nova Scotians - Archives ] ] .

The document contains valuable records on 3000 African Americans. The former slaves recorded in the Book of Negroes were evacuated to colonies in British North America; for example, thousands formed the community of Black Nova Scotians which is still strong today. Others moved on, via the auspices of the Sierra Leone Company, to Sierra Leone, where they formed the original settlers of Freetown and founded the Krio people.

Notable people recorded in the Book of Negroes included Boston King, Henry Washington, David George, Moses Wilkinson, and Cato Perkins.

The Book of Negroes was recorded separately by both American and British officers and because of this there are two versions of the document. The original British version is held in the UK National Archives in Kew, London. The American version of the Book of Negroes was republished under the title "The Black Loyalist Directory: African Americans in Exile After the American Revolution" by Graham Russell Hodges, Susan Hawkes Cook, and Alan Edward Brown.

Modern book with same name

"The Book of Negroes", or "Someone Knows My Name", by Lawrence Hill is a bestseller about the Nova Scotian settlers who "brought America to Africa". It was the overall winner of the 2008 Commonwealth Writers' Prize.
