The Book of Negroes is an important historical document which includes descriptions and information on those
African American s who escaped to the British during theRevolutionary War . The document was recorded in1783 and is the only one which recorded Black Americans in a large, detailed scope of work [ [http://www.gov.ns.ca/nsarm/virtual/africanns/archives.asp?ID=29 Nova Scotia Archives & Records Management - African Nova Scotians - Archives ] ] .The document contains valuable records on 3000 African Americans. The former slaves recorded in the Book of Negroes were evacuated to colonies in
British North America ; for example, thousands formed the community ofBlack Nova Scotians which is still strong today. Others moved on, via the auspices of theSierra Leone Company , toSierra Leone , where they formed the original settlers of Freetown and founded theKrio people .Notable people recorded in the Book of Negroes included
Boston King ,Henry Washington , David George, Moses Wilkinson, andCato Perkins .The Book of Negroes was recorded separately by both American and British officers and because of this there are two versions of the document. The original British version is held in the UK
National Archives in Kew, London. The American version of the Book of Negroes was republished under the title "The Black Loyalist Directory: African Americans in Exile After the American Revolution" by Graham Russell Hodges, Susan Hawkes Cook, and Alan Edward Brown.Modern book with same name
