64th Virginia Infantry

64th Virginia Infantry

The 64th Virginia Infantry regiment was formed on the basis of limited service to guard mountain passes in Lee, Scott, and Wise counties from which the regiment was raised for the American Civil War.

The internal disputes which seem to have pervaded the highest levels of regimental command were definitely a factor in the performance of the 64th. Several commented that the mountain boys would fight like the devil but would not accept discipline. Nowhere was this more true than in the 64th. The 64th, however, added a new element to the maxim; they would only fight where it suited them to fight. Over time, many of the men in the 64th and the Confederate army, became tired of the war. They just went home. The men of the 64th left a mixed legacy. No doubt they did what they perceived was a good job in defence of their abortive nation.
