Lila Mayoral Wirshing

Lila Mayoral Wirshing

Lila Mayoral Wirshing was the second longest-serving First Lady of Puerto Rico.

Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, she married young attorney Rafael Hernández Colón, with whom she had four children, Rafael, José Alfredo Hernández Mayoral, both attorneys in private practice, educator Dora Mercedes and Juan Eugenio Hernández Mayoral, currently a member of the Puerto Rico Senate.

As Hernández Colón's wife she stood with him during a long political career that included serving as Puerto Rico's Attorney General and President of the Senate. She served as First Lady of Puerto Rico for twelve years, first from 1973 to 1976, and subsequently from 1985 to 1992. During her years in La Fortaleza, the oldest executive mansion in the Americas, she spearheaded different civic campaigns, including a reforestation drive decades before reforestation was being touted as an effective response to then unknown global warming.

She died a victim of colon cancer in early 2003. A school in her native Ponce was named in her honor.
