Big W (disambiguation)

Big W (disambiguation)

Big W (or BIG W) may refer to one of two unrelated retail operations:
* Big W, an Australian chain of discount stores owned by Woolworths Limited (an Australian company)
* Big W, a now-defunct British chain of large-format stores owned by Woolworths Group plc (a British company)

It should be noted that, in spite of the similarity of names, the Australian and British Woolworths companies (and their respective 'Big W' subsidiaries) are not, and never were related. The latter was originally a subsidiary of F.W. Woolworth Company, whereas the former never was (see history of Woolworth's Limited for an explanation).

It is unclear whether the British Woolworths' choice of "Big W" for their stores was influenced by the Australian BIG W stores (mirroring the situation with the original Woolworths name), or if it was purely coincidental.

The Big W also refers to where the 350,000 G's are hidden in the film It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.
