S.S.Neponset. Built by the Sun Shipbuilding Co.Chester,Pa. Keel laid 7 Nov,1917,launched 4July,1918 Under the name SS Shawmut.The Navy took ownership of the ship before delivery Renamed it the SS Neponset # 3581 Delivered to the Navy 28 Oct,1918.The Neponset made one voyage across the Atlantic Carrying general cargo,horses,and Veterinary replacement personnel.Returned to the US decommissioned Feb 1919.Returned to the United States Shipping Board.Later renamed The origanil Shawmut,Shawmut SS Co. Then renamed the Susan V. Luckenbach,Luckenbach Lines. 11,437 tons.
Navy service
The steamship Neponset, a 7699 gross ton freighter, was built at Chester, Pennsylvania. Launched in July 1918 under the name Shawmut, she was renamed before completion. The Navy took her over in late October 1918 and simultaneously placed her in commission as USS Neponset (ID # 3581). She made one voyage across the Atlantic to France in November, carrying general cargo and a shipment of horses. She was decommissioned in early February 1919, after returning to the U.S., and was returned to the United States Shipping Board.
