Early life and education
Born in
Turin , Agostino Richelmy received hisConfirmation onAugust 13 ,1857 , and later joined the Garibaldian Volunteers in the War of 1866, wearing his red shirt under hiscassock for years afterwards [TIME Magazine. [http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,716401,00.html Milestones]August 20 ,1923 ] . He studied at theseminary in Turin, from where he obtained his doctorate in theology onMay 18 ,1876 . He was ordained to the priesthood onApril 25 ,1873 , and finished his studies three years later. Within the Archdiocese of Turin, Richelmy taught at its seminary, served as a prosynod al examiner, and was a canon of thecathedral chapter.Episcopate

June 7 ,1886 , he was appointedBishop of Ivrea byPope Leo XIII . Richelmy received his episcopal consecration on the followingOctober 28 fromGaetano Cardinal Alimonda , with BishopsDavide Riccardi andGiovanni Bertagna serving as co-consecrators. He was later named Archbishop of Turin onSeptember 18 ,1897 .Cardinalate
Pope Leo created him Cardinal Priest of "S. Eusebio" in the
consistory ofJune 18 ,1899 . After participating in the 1903 papal conclave, Richelmy's cardinalatial church was transferred to "S. Maria in Via" onNovember 27 ,1911 . He was one of the cardinal electors in the conclave of 1914, and also in the that of 1922, which selectedPope Benedict XV andPope Pius XI respectively. In 1915, whenItaly enteredWorld War I , Richelmy organized priests for duty as armychaplain s in themountain s of Trentino, where they carvedaltar s out ofsnow and said Mass in below-zero temperatures [Ibid.] .The Cardinal died in Turin, at age 72. He was initially buried at the
chapel for theclergy in the Turincemetery , but his remains were transferred in 1927 to the "Consolata"Shrine , where they lie in a pinkmarble sarcophagus .Trivia
*Richelmy succeeded Davide Riccardi, who assisted in the former's episcopal consecration, as both Bishop of Ivrea and Archbishop of Turin.
