stadium in theCroatia n city ofSplit . It takes its name from the neighbourhood of Poljud, its original name is "Gradski stadion u Poljudu" ("City Stadium in Poljud"). It is the home of HNK Hajduk Split, one of the top football teams in the country. The stadium currently has a capacity of 35,000.The nominal capacity was 55,000 when it was built. The stadium was built as major sports centre for the
1979 Mediterranean Games and opened byJosip Broz Tito .Poljud Stadium was also venue for 1990 European Championships in athletics.
The record attendance was 62,000 in
1982 , in football matchHNK Hajduk Split versus Dinamo Zagreb, when these two Croatian football teams competed for Championship title.The stadium also served as popular venue for music events. Some of the most spectacular of those include the concerts of
Mišo Kovač in 1993,Marko Perković -Thompson in 2002. and Britishheavy metal bandIron Maiden on theirSomewhere Back In Time World Tour in 2008.The stadium is affectionately known to the locals as the "Poljudska ljepotica" or "Poljud beauty". Poljud is the second largest stadium in Croatia after the
Maksimir stadium .The reconstruction on the stadium is planned. It will cost approximately 90 million
euro . After reconstruction the stadium will have 44,000 seats. The reconstruction was planned as a part of a joint Croatian-Hungarian bid to host theEuro 2012 competition. Since Croatia and Hungary did not get the organization for Euro 2012, the planned reconstruction is for now on hold.Gallery
