Fylde College is a constituent college of the University of Lancaster, in Lancashire, UK. The college was the sixth of the university's colleges. Construction of the college buildings began in 1968 and the college began accepting students in 1969. The college is named after The Fylde peninsular of Lancashire.

Residences

In 2005 Fylde became the second college to be located on two separate sites, and offered on-suite residences in Alexandra Park, at the south west of the campus.

Fylde has since been reunited on its original site and is now one of the smaller colleges on campus. All the new en-suite study rooms are furnished to high standard and include a bed with underbed storage, study workstation with phone, computer and tv aerial sockets, study chair, wardrobe with mirror, shelves and pinboard. The Kitchen/diners are well equipped and are shared between 8 students. Fylde will have its new social space for the end of year Extrav, also giving it the newest social space on campus for new undergraduates arriving in 2008.

The residence houses built in 2006 are named after windmills on the Fylde peninsular:
*Clifton
*Kirkham
*Lytham
*Marton
*Pilling
*Thornton

In 2008 Fylde will also occupy a number of ensuite rooms in the "George Fox building".

ymbols

The college motto is "In arvo quaerere verum" "Seek Truth in the Field. Its coat of arms includes a windmill, the Red Rose of Lancaster and two discs of water represneting the River Lune and the River Ribble. The college emblem is a windmill and is represented in the JCR logo as a sketch of the Marsh Mill at Thornton. Fylde colours are "old gold" and "green", peculiarly represented on the college scarf in "orange" and "black".

port

The College, which has a reputation for being the sportiest on campus, has lost the Carter shield - the competition shield for sport - only once in 14 years.

Fylde are also the current holders of both the A and B team football leagues.

Politics

Traditionally, Fylde had a reputation as the socialist college. Its original second and third year students were inspired by the events of May 1968 to seize the opportunity to make a socialist commune. In 1969 The Queen came to open The County College. The Fylde JCR President reacted by dubbing his pet toad "Archduke Albert of Lancaster". Over-eager press coverage saw this as a scandal. [ [http://www.lancs.ac.uk/users/fylde/allabout/abouthistory.htm History of Fylde College] ] On the day that Fylde college building was to be opened in 1971 by the minister for education, students planned to demonstrate. The opening never took place.
