- Elsa Bakalar
Elsa Bakalar was a famous
garden designer-advisor, best known for her book "A Garden of One's Own," (Morrow & Company, New York, 1994) aimed at demystifying the art of creating beautiful gardens. This book dwells chiefly on the all-important question, "How do you start a garden?" She goes beyond the basic mechanics of planting and watering, and talks about placement and the effect different plants have on the viewer. Because of this deepness, the book goes beyond a basic, beginner's garden book. Elsa Bakalar's work has been featured inHorticulture magazine,The Boston Globe , andNewsday , and she has worked with theHarvard University Arnold Arboretum and theNew England Wildflower Society. She was born in England and worked for many years as a teacher in New York City. She moved toMassachusetts with her husband Michael to devote herself full-time to gardening.ee also
