Harlingen High School South is a high school located on 1701 Dixieland Road in Harlingen, Texas and is part of the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District. HHSS is the second of 2 public high schools in Harlingen. Harlingen High School was the sole high school up until 1993 when the school split and Harlingen High School South was formed.

Traditions

HHSS Alma Mater

If we live to be a hundred,
If today we die,
If we go away forever,
We'll not say goodbye.

Time someday will wash away
Like sands into the sea,
But there beneath the flowing tide
Lie our memories.

If we hear the west-wind calling
Our name with a sigh,
We'll be there with hope & promise
And our spirits high.

Time will cease, and life will leave,
But Harlingen South won't die
For in our hearts she'll live forever,
We'll not say goodbye.

HHSS Fight Song

On wings of victory, we
Fly proudly lifted by the
Spirit of the mighty Hawk.
Hear our battle cry,
South! Fight! Win!

Led by our ensign boldly,
We enter battle, so we
Lift our banner to the sky
And shout our battle cry,
South! Fight! Win!

Homecoming

Homecoming week is full of tradition at HHSS. The week is designated spirit week with each day allowing the students to dress in a certain fashion not normally acceptable by rule (e.i. Western day, Orange out day, etc.). Thursday night prior to the game on Friday is rich in tradition. The evening starts with a parade down Dixieland Road featuring a "floats" on which representatives from each club ride on. The parade is followed by a special homecoming pep rally. The night concludes with the traditional Burning of the "HS". A large steel "HS" is wrapped in cloth set up in a field near the school and set on fire.

Football

Currently the Harlingen Hawks are coached by Alan Cherry. In the 2007 season, the Hawks have won all 10 of their games in district play.

Bird Bowl

In 1993 Harlingen High School split up into 2 schools, HHS and Harlingen High School South. Because HHSS selected the hawk as their mascot, the rivalry was dubbed the "Bird Bowl". Although the rivalry is only 15 years old, the game is every bit as intense as the Battle of the Arroyo, more so now that the city of Harlingen is no longer in the same athletic district as San Bentio. Early on, the Cardinals defeated the Hawks for many years, but in recent years, the Hawks have began to win. The Cardinals still lead the series 11-4 despite losing 2007's Bird Bowl XV. Because both schools share J. Lewis Boggus Stadium, the "home" team designation is alternated every season.
