Huckleberry Ridge Tuff

Huckleberry Ridge Tuff

The Huckleberry Ridge Tuff is a tuff formation created by the Huckleberry Ridge eruption of a massive caldera encompassing what is now the Yellowstone Caldera. This eruption was the largest of the 3 latest caldera forming eruptions in the Yellowstone region. The tuffs created after the cataclysmic eruption 2 million years ago are extensive in volume. It has been estimated that around 2450 km³ of ash was ejected.

Like the eruption, the caldera created is also exceedingly large. The caldera is around 75km long, reaching from Island Park to the center of the Yellowstone Plateau. It contains both calderas from the more recent eruptions: Island Park Caldera which created the Mesa Falls Tuff 1.3 million years ago and the modern day Yellowstone Caldera which created the Lava Creek Tuff 640,000 years ago.
