Lyn Philp (born Lynley V Philp 27 January, 1924 in Lower Hutt - died 17 July, 1981), was a New Zealand professional boxer, and New Zealand's Bantamweight Champion from 1947 - 1954.

Biography

On graduation from school, Philp was drafted into the New Zealand Army, serving with distinction in the Middle East and Japan in World War II. [citeweb|url=http://riv.co.nz/jf/lp.htm|title=L-P - Lyn Philp|accessdate=2008-01-11]

Professional career

After leaving the Army, Philp joined the training stable of the legendary Dick Dunn. His first professional fight was a win against Ronnie Hawes on the April 21 1947 at Town Hall, Wellington.citeweb|url=http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=144404&cat=boxer|title=Lyn Philp|publisher=boxrec.com|accessdate=2008-01-11]

On August 6 1947, he met and lost to Tot Hoggarth in the first of three meetings between the pair, where he won the second and gained the New Zealand bantamweight title in the third, on February 21 1948. Philp retained the belt until his eventual retirement from the ring on June 6 1954, when he vacated the title.

His record after this point was even, with three wins and three loses, although he was matched to meet World Champion Jimmy Carruthers before his retirement.
