Gerald Finley (born
30 January 1960 ) is a Canadianbass-baritone opera singer.Career
He was born in
Montreal and received his musical education in St. Matthew's (Anglican) Church, Ottawa, theUniversity of Ottawa ,King's College, Cambridge and theRoyal College of Music inLondon , England. He is particularly renowned for his interpretations ofMozart roles such as Guglielmo, Papageno, Figaro, the Count and Don Giovanni. He made hisNew York debut at theMetropolitan Opera onJanuary 24 ,1998 in the role of Papageno in "Die Zauberflöte ". Other roles he has originated include Harry Heegan in "The Silver Tassie " byMark-Anthony Turnage at theEnglish National Opera and the title role in "Fantastic Mr. Fox" byTobias Picker at theLos Angeles Opera . This is the second time he will have sung a Tchaichovsky fole for the Royal Opera; the first being Prince Yeletsky, from "Pique Dame".
