She is the last surviving example of some 225 steam schooners that served the lumber trade and other coastal services along the Pacific coast of theUnited States She is managed by theNational Park Service atSan Francisco Maritime National Historic Park , but is currently located across the bay awaiting possible renovation."Wapama" was declared a

She is a 204 foot wooden schooner, 40 feet across with 2 masts. She has a triple expansion steam engine with 825 hp. She could carry 1 million board feet of lumber. [http://www.nr.nps.gov/Red%20Books/73000228.red.pdf NPS Red Book] ]
Currently, she has severe dry rot which has threatened the structural integrity of the hull. She has been been pulled out of the water onto a barge, but will need extensive renovation.
