December 28 ,1984 ) was a convict onDeath Row atLouisiana State Penitentiary . He was reached out to by SisterHelen Prejean , one of the sisters of St Joseph of Medailles, who based her book "Dead Man Walking " on him. He also provided the inspiration for theSean Penn character, Matthew Poncelet, in the film "Dead Man Walking". He was executed in theelectric chair for theMay 28 ,1980 kidnap, rape, and murder of 18 year old Faith Hathaway inMandeville, Louisiana .ee also
