FC Germania 1899 Mühlhausen

FC Germania Mühlhausen was an early German football club that played in Mühlhausen, Thuringia. The club was founded 23 February 1899 by a group of 14 school boys who had been playing football on the army drill field since 1893-94. They played their first match in April 1899 against "SC Erfurt" and dropped a 0:2 decision. "Germania" is notable as a founding member of the DFB (Deutscher Fussball Bund or German Football Association) at Leipzig in 1900.

In 1913 the club merged with "Fußball Club 1901 Teutonia Mühlhausen" to form "Sportvereinigung 1899 Mühlhausen". Over the next three decades the name of the club changed several times and the lineage of the club became somewhat murky. Following World War II three clubs emerged out of the city's football tradition: "BSG Post", "Motor" and "ASG Vorwärts". In June 1972 "Post" and "Motor" merged to form "BSG Union Mühlhausen". Throughout this period these clubs played in the district level Bezirksliga. In 1987, "Union" broke through to the DDR-Liga (II). After German reunification in 1990 the club returned to Berzirksliga play and took on a new identity as "Sportverein Union Mühlhausen". They assumed the traditional name "SV 1899 Muehlhausen" in 1994 before becoming "FC Union" in 2000.
