- Raphaël Lépine
Raphaël Lépine (
July 6 ,1840 -November 17 ,1919 ) was a Frenchphysiologist who was a native ofLyon . He studied underJean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893) inParis , and afterwards worked in hospitals in Paris and Lyon. In 1877 he became professor of clinical medicine at l’Hôtel-Dieu de Lyon. He was the brother ofprefect Louis Lépine (1846-1933), creator of the "Concours Lépine". Two of his better-known students wereFrédéric Justin Collet (1870-1966) andLéon Bouveret (1850-1929).Raphaël Lépine is known for his studies in experimental medicine, particularly his research involving the
pathophysiology ofdiabetes , and his investigations ofblood sugar andglycogenesis . He made important contributions in the study of internal secretions of thepancreas , and did extensive research ofglycosuria . Among his written works were two influential works on diabetes called "Les complications du diabète et leur traitement" and "Le diabète non compliqué et son traitement".References
