Gerald Irving Richardson

Superintendent Gerald Irving Richardson GC (2 November 1932 - 23 August 1971), of the Lancashire Constabulary was posthumously awarded the George Cross for the heroism he displayed on the 23rd of August 1971 in chasing a gang of armed robbers who had attacked a jewellers shop in Blackpool. He and Constable Carl Walker, who also won the decoration, tackled the raiders and Richardson was shot in the stomach while attempting to persuade one of the criminals to surrender his weapon. He died of his injuries the same day in Victoria Hospital, Blackpool.

His award was noted in the London Gazette of the 13th of November 1972. [ [http://www.gc-database.co.uk/recipients/RichardsonGI.htm] ] He is buried in Layton Cemetery.
