The long campaign was a
military campaign led byJohn Hunyadi and Ulaszlo I of Hungary across theBalkans against the Ottomans fromJuly 22 ,1443 toJanuary 25 ,1444 .The
christian army started atBuda including Hungarian, Polish, Czech, German infantry and cavalry, 3000 wagons. Later, 10000Wallachia n joined, so the whole army was 35000 men strong.The first battle was at
Krusevac , and Ottomans were defeated.Hunyadi, at the head of the vanguard, crossed theBalkans through theGate of Trajan , capturedNiš , defeated three Turkishpasha s, and, after takingSofia , united with the royal army and defeated SultanMurad II atSnaim . The impatience of the king and the severity of the winter then compelled him to return home, but not before he had utterly broken the Sultan's power in Bosnia,Herzegovina , Serbia,Bulgaria , andAlbania .
