Giovanni Parenti [Johannes, Joannes, John Parenti; Johannes Parens.] (died 1250) was an Italian
Franciscan .He led a mission to Spain in 1219 [ [http://www.ofmconv.org/franciscans/FranConv-5.htm] ] ; and Provincial for Spain.
He succeeded
Francis of Assisi at the head of the Order of Friars Minor, in 1227, becoming the firstMinister General of the Order. This was on 30 May [ [http://www.christusrex.org/www1/ofm/fra/FRAht01.html History of the Franciscan Movement (1) ] ] , Francis having died in October 1226, andElias of Cortona having headed the Order for half a year.At the 1230 General Chapter, Elias attempted to take charge of the Order; but he was resisted [ [http://www.churchofthebeatitudes.com/1226_1274.htm 1226_1274 ] ] . He was elected minister-general in 1232, after Parenti had been put under pressure to step down [Colin Morris, "The Papal Monarchy: The Western Church from 1050 to 1250", p. 462.] .
