Glenmuir High School

Glenmuir High School is a secondary institution in the parish of Clarendon, Jamaica WI. The school was founded on September 15, 1958 as a private co-educational secondary school of the Anglican Diocese. The founder was the late Rt Reverend Percival Gibson, Bishop of Jamaica. Their motto is "Flagrans Veritatis Studio", which means "Burning with the Zeal for Truth".

History

On the day the school opened, there were 55 students and 4 members of staff on a 25 acre piece of land. There was only one building on the property and this was used not only to provide classrooms and administrative offices but also to house the Headmaster, Dr S. H Scott, and his family. The school was recognized as a Government grant-aided secondary institution by the Ministry of Education after just one year. Construction of the first block of classrooms were started in 1959 by the Ministry of Education. By the Easter term in 1962, there was a total of 236 pupils attending the school.

Current Principal

The present Principal is Mr. Clement Radcliffe, B.Sc., Dip. Ed., MA. He is himself a past student of Glenmuir High School. Having graduated from the University of the West Indies in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree, First Class Honours, he returned to serve his alma mater in that same year. In 1981, he was awarded the degree of Master of Education from the same University.

Extra-Curricular Activities

The school has become involved in various extra-curricular activities. Students are exposed to activities such as Drama, Debating, and Choral Music. Glenmuir High School now boasts one of the best and most successful school choirs in Jamaica. They have also performed overseas in countries such as England and the United States.
Sports is also heavily influenced at the school. Inter-school sports is also very popular with the House system. The Houses are deRoux, Muirhead, Pawsey and Gibson House. There is an annual sporting competition between the Houses on a day called Sports Day. Football (soccer), netball, cricket, table tennis and basketball are a few sports that Glenmuir usually participate in during the school year. The football team was recently successful in winning the ISSA DaCosta Cup Football competition in 2004 and 2006.
