Kurchatov (in Kazakh and Russian: Курча́тов) is a town in
East Kazakhstan Province in northeastKazakhstan . Named after Soviet nuclear physicistIgor Kurchatov , the town was once the centre of operations for the adjoiningSemipalatinsk Test Site . With the cessation ofnuclear testing and the decomissioning of the test site, Kurchatov's population has fallen from over 20,000 to around 8,000. Irtysh River at its confluence with theChagan River . Arailway connects it to the nearby village ofMoldary to the west and toSemey 100 miles to the east.
