Jacques-Joseph Ebelmen

Jacques-Joseph Ebelmen (1814-1852) was a French chemist who was a professor at the Ecole des Mines, where his field of expertise was the chemical analysis of rocks. He is remembered for developing a process to grow artificial crystals of a number of minerals including corundum, chrysoberyl and peridot. In 1845 he became head of the Sèvres porcelain manufactory and worked on improved methods of manufacturing ceramics. The Ebelmen Award in Geochemistry is named in his honor; it is given out by the International Association of GeoChemistry.
