Søren Norrby

Søren Norrby

Søren (or Severin) Andersen Norrby (also known under nickname Merry Admiral) was a 16th century Danish Grand Admiral.

The first document concerning his acts as an admiral was in 1504. He first fought for the Swedes, then the Danish, for whom he was among many things governor of Iceland. His greatest feat under Danish flag was the capture and occupation of Gotland which he actually turned into a pirate-kingdom. He ended his carrier at the service of Ivan the Terrible of Russia after an unfruitful effort to recapture the throne of Denmark to his lord Christian II. He probably died in Russia in 1530.Fact|date=March 2008
