Yeomanry House

Yeomanry House

Yeomanry House is currently a barracks of the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry/Scottish Horse located in Cupar, Fife. It started life as a Napoleonic Prison for captured French Soldiers and after the war with France, it was used as a prison for local criminals until it was converted in to barracks.

Today

Cells

A walled compound with the main prison at one end it still contains many of the original cells which are used as stores for military equipment.

Museum

Today the building also contains a small regimental library and archive collection relating to both The Fife and Forfar Yeomanry and The Scottish Horse which can be viewed by appointment. The Bell

During restoration of Yeomanry House in the 1950s a ship's bell was found buried in the ground beside the main building. It was cleaned up and used as the Regimental Bell of the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry/Scottish Horse from then onwards.

The Grave Yards

In the location of today's car/tank park was originally the prison cemetery.

The Tunnel

It is alleged that a tunnel exists linking the old prison with the town centre to allow condemned men to be moved to easily to the hangman's noose in the centre of town without interference.

The Ghost

There have been various sightings of ghosts at Yeomanry House, the most common of which is the ghost of a corpse which seems to move through the air.
