Doug MacLean as the general manager. MacLean had previously been the head coach of theFlorida Panthers , leading the team to theStanley Cup Finals in 1996. MacLean hired Dave King as the head coach of the Jackets. King had previously been the head coach of theCalgary Flames from 1992–95, and was an assistant on theMontreal Canadiens from 1997–99.On
June 23 ,2000 , the Blue Jackets and their expansion cousins, theMinnesota Wild , participated in the2000 NHL Expansion Draft inCalgary, Alberta . Columbus selected goaltenderRick Tabaracci with their 1st pick. The following day onJune 24 , Columbus would participate in the2000 NHL Entry Draft , and selectedRostislav Klesla with the 4th overall pick.On
October 7 ,2000 , Columbus would play in their 1st ever game, losing 5–3 to theChicago Blackhawks atNationwide Arena .Bruce Gardiner scored the 1st goal in franchise history. The Blue Jackets would win their 1st ever game onOctober 12 , defeating theCalgary Flames 3–2 at thePengrowth Saddledome . Columbus would win its 1st home game onOctober 27 , defeating the visitingWashington Capitals 3–1.The Blue Jackets, like most expansion teams, would struggle throughout the season, and would finish the year 11 games under .500, with a 28–39–9–6 record, earning 71 points, 19 points behind the
