Elof Axel Carlson (1931–) is distinguished teaching professor emeritus at State University of New York at Stony Brook, as well as a American geneticist and noted historian of Science. Dr. Carlson earned his B.A. 1953 from New York University, and his PhD 1958 in zoology from Indiana University [http://www.semesteratsea.com/voyages/fall2001/fa2001_facultybios.html Semester At Sea - Fall 2001 ] ] under the mentorship of Hermann Joseph Muller. Dr. Carlson is a past recipient of the E. Harris Harbison Award for excellence in teaching given by the Danforth Foundation [ [http://www.stonybrook.edu/research/honors/honbyfac.html USB Honors by Faculty Member ] ] .

He has been a visiting professor at the University of Minnesota, San Diego State University, and Tougaloo College. He was also a McMurrin visiting professorship at the University of Utah [http://www.ugs.utah.edu/faculty/mcmurrin.htm]
