William Radenhurst Mosedale

William Radenhurst Mosedale was awarded the George Cross for the heroism he displayed on the 12 December 1940 [http://www.search.digital-ladywood.org.uk/engine/resource/default.asp?theme=406&originator=%2Fengine%2Ftheme%2Fdefault.asp&page=&records=&direction=&pointer=2233&text=0&resource=9283] .

A station officer in the Birmingham Fire Brigade, and a rescue officer in the use of breathing apparatus, he tunnelled for nearly 12 hours in extremely dangerous conditions to rescue a dozen trapped people after his fire station had itself been destroyed by a high explosive bomb, trapping a number of firemen in the rubble and burying civilians in an adjoining dwelling.

His award was announced in the London Gazette on 28 March 1941.
