John Daniel Tinder (born 1950 in
Indianapolis, Indiana ) is a federal judge on theUnited States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit .Background
Tinder is a native Hoosier, and went to
Indiana University for college and law school. He graduated with aBachelor of Science degree in 1972, and his law degree in 1975. While in law school, Tinder worked at the U.S. Attorney's office in Indianapolis during 1974, and he became an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana in 1974, a position he stayed in until 1977.In 1977, Tinder entered into private practice in Indianapolis, which he continued in until 1984 when he returned to the United States Attorney Office in Indianapolis, this time as its leader. In addition to his work in the private sector, Tinder served as a public defender from 1977-1978 for the Marion County Criminal Court. From 1979-1982, Tinder was chief trial deputy for the Marion County Prosecutor's Office.
Tinder was nominated to a judgeship on the U.S. District Court by President
Ronald Reagan onJune 2 ,1987 , to replace JudgeJames Noland on theUnited States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana , and theU.S. Senate confirmed him just two months later onAugust 7 ,1987 . After twenty years of service as a trial judge, Tinder was nominated on
July 17 ,2007 by PresidentGeorge W. Bush to replace JudgeDaniel Anthony Manion on the Seventh Circuit bench. Manion had previously indicated he would assumeSenior status upon confirmation of a successor. Tinder's hearings before theSenate Judiciary Committee were uncontroversial, and he was voted out of Committee to the Senate floor in November 2007. He was confirmed onDecember 19 ,2007 by a vote of [http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=110&session=1&vote=00442 93-0] , almost exactly five months after his nomination.
