Telkwice , then inEast Prussia (then a part ofWeimar Republic ) he was a son of Franciszek Chełkowski, a wealthy landowner and prominent activist of Polish community in Prussia and his wife Emilia (maiden name Mieczkowska). He was related to the number of others Polish activist by his maternal side.He was a graduate of prestigious
Karol Marcinkowski Secondary School inPoznań (commonly known as "Marcinek") andAdam Mickiewicz University in Poznań . He earned bachelor degree ("magister") fromphysics in 1952 and master degree ("doktorat") in 1958.He went to became professor of the
University of Silesia in 1973 and a higher ranking professor ("profesor zwyczajny") in 1990. He worked primary on hisalma mater .He served as a President of Silesia Uniersity from
September 1 ,1981 untilJanuary 12 ,1982 .He was an author of a number of works on physics.
In 1980 he became a member of the
Solidarity and an active figure in opposition. He was the only president of the university arrested during theMartial Law .After fall of communism he was elected to the Senate from Solidarity and served until his death.
He served as a Senate Marshal during Senate 2nd term (
December 23 ,1991 -October 16 ,1993 .
