- Hans Rebel
Hans Rebel (2 September 1861,
Hietzing , nearVienna - 19 May 1940, Vienna) was anAustria nentomologist who specialised inLepidoptera .Rebel had an early interest innatural history andbutterflies but became, at first, a lawyer. He devoted his spare time to studying Lepidoptera and established an entomological section of theBotanical and Zoological Society of Vienna . He succeededAlois Friedrich Rogenhofer (1831-1897) as conservator of the Lepidoptera of theNaturhistorisches Museum in Vienna a post he held from 1897 to 1932. Rebel enriched the collections and a "grand voyageur", he made many collecing trips inAustro-Hungary and five in theBalkans . He directed the Departement of Zoology 1923 and the the museum in 1925. He published more than 300 publications on Lepidoptera and a catalogue ofPalearctic butterfliesOtto Staudinger (1830-1900)-"Catalog Lepidopteren des palaearctischen Faunengebietes". Friedlander.
