Fliegertruppe duringWorld War I . He started service with the Saxon Hussar Regt Nr. 18 before learning to fly in August 1916. He then flew two seaters with FFA 53 and FA 272 (A), before becoming a fighter pilot with Jasta 36, which was commanded by his brother Walter who fell in January 1918. After the death of his brother Conrad in August 1918, Harry was discharged from the service - by order of the Kaiser: in fact he was the last of four brothers - the oldest, Friedrich, already fell in 1914.After
World War I he returned to school (Gymnasium) receiving hisAbitur and went toUniversity studyingagriculture . Together withPaul Bäumer he founded the "Bäumer Aero" inHamburg -Fuhlsbüttel . The company went bankrupt in the course of theGreat Depression .During
World War II he commanded II./JG 77 in 1939, thenJagdgeschwader 2 in April 1940. Later he commanded the 5th Fighter Division in 1943.Awards
