Studies in Comparative Religion

"Studies in Comparative Religion" was a quarterly journal, published from 1963-1987, containing essays on the spiritual practices and religious symbolism of the world's religions. The journal was notable for the number of prominent Perennialists who contributed to it. It was also notable for being the first English-language journal focused on the subject of traditional studies and comparative religion.

History

The journal was founded in 1963 by Francis Clive-Ross, who also served as editor-in-chief and publisher. From 1963-1967 the journal was published under the name "Tomorrow". Perennialist author William Stoddart also served as an assistant editor for many years. Jacob Needleman, editor of "The Penguin Metaphysical Library", published a collection of essays from "Studies in Comparative Religion" under the title "The Sword of Gnosis". The journal ceased publication in 1987 and the articles were unavailable until 2007, when World Wisdom launched a free on-line archive.

Contributors

There were numerous contributors to the journal over its 25 years of publication. Some of the most prominent and frequent contributors include:
*Ananda K. Coomaraswamy - metaphysician, prominent author on Indian philosophy, culture, and artistic symbolism, one of the three founders of the Traditionalist School.
*Charles le Gai Eaton - consultant to the Islamic Cultural Centre in London, author of several books on Islam.
*Frithjof Schuon - prominent voice of the Perennial Philosophy, one of the three founders of the Traditionalist School.
*Joseph Epes Brown - scholar and author of American Indian religious traditions.
*Kathleen Raine - poet and scholar, well known for her work on William Blake and W. B. Yeats.
*Lord Northbourne - the 4th Baron Northbourne, writer on Traditionalist and Perennialist themes.
*Marco Pallis - composer, author, and scholar of Tibetan culture and religion.
*Martin Lings - Shakespearian scholar, author of several books on Sufism.
*René Guénon - metaphysician and philosopher, one of the three founders of the Traditionalist School.
*Seyyed Hossein Nasr - author, scholar of comparative religion and Sufism.
*Titus Burckhardt - prominent voice of the Perennial Philosophy.
*William Stoddart - author on the Perennial Philosophy.
