Originally established as "Königliche Seedampf-Maschinistenschule" (roughly: "Royal School for Naval Steam Machinists") the university was founded in
1886 . Until1975 the FHF mainly educated marine engineers and officers. The expansion of the study program over the past 30 years has added all majorengineering andinformation technology disciplines and a school forbusiness administration .The FHF has a strong emphasis on
nautical engineering ,communication technology andrenewable energies . This focus is supported by the state of Schleswig-Holstein which is one of the European major regions in applying renewable energy andenvironmental technologies with a current coverage of about 30% of its electricity consumption bywind energy andbiogas plants.Faculties

Merged with the FHF the
University of Flensburg ("Universität Flensburg") is also sited on the Campus. The infrastructure includes the main lecture hall ("Auditorium Maximum"), the central library, a wide park area, student residences, akindergarten , a sports and fitness center and the canteen ("Mensa"), also several small cafeterias and pubs. The main railway station is about one mile from the campus.International
The Flensburg Campus is the northernmost university of Germany sited about 10 km south of the Danish border at the Flensburg
Fjord . Several bi-national study programs are established together with the nearby University ofSønderborg ,Denmark and other European partner universities within theERASMUS programme .
