The first edition of the Copa America, unofficial and never recognized byCONMEBOL as official, was held inArgentina fromMay 29 toJune 12 ,1910 . The original name of this competition was "Copa Centenario Revolución de Mayo 1910" but then was renamed South American Championship by CONMEBOL.This contest was in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the Argentinian
May Revolution (May 25th, 1810). It was the first international tournament in South America where more than two football nations participated. Previously, there were only international competitions between the football teams of Uruguay and Argentina, as the Copa Newton, the Copa Lipton or the Gran Premio de Honor Argentino. Because of this tournament three of the subsequent four founding members of the CONMEBOL participated, it was called the first "Copa América". However, the South American Football Federation declared the first Copa America in 1916 when CONMEBOL was founded. The tournament was the league system. The three games were in Buenos Aires in three different stadiums, in Cancha de Gimnasia y Esgrima, Cancha de Belgrano and in the Colegiales en Plermo out. All three stages then took approximately 8,000 - 10,000 spectators.
There was no qualifying for the tournament. The participating countries were Argentina, Chile and Uruguay.
