UN Peacemaker

UN Peacemaker is an information and knowledge management tool of the United Nations to support international peacemaking professionals.

It provides resources for international mediators, such as information on peace agreements, and peacemaking mandates. The databank contains more than 350 peace agreements signed since 1945, and over 500 documents, articles and excerpts from books that highlight noteworthy analysis, UN mediation or related themes. Moreover, UN Peacemaker includes an extensive Legal Library containing the legal framework that guides the UN’s efforts in peacemaking. In addition, the site offers easy access to peacemaking knowledge by providing a Peacemaker's Toolbox, Lessons Learned, Case Briefs, Operational Guidance Notes, Knowledge Essays and Comments on peace agreements and on the management of peace processes.

Lessons on peacemaking have been derived from the United Nations' extensive experience in peacemaking. Guidance and comments have been gained from interviews with UN staff and the UN Peacemakers themselves.

Publicly launched on 3 October 2006, it is part of the overall effort of the United Nations Department of Political Affairs (DPA) to provide advice and support to the UN Secretary-General and his Representatives in their efforts to resolve international disputes and internal conflicts.

In June 2008 DPA‘s innovative UN Peacemaker databank was announced i as a winner of the UN 21 Award for 2007 in the category of “knowledge management” projects. United Nations envoys and staff, Member States, regional organizations, NGOs and research institutions are frequent users of the site, which since its launch has accumulated more than 6,500 registered users. It has become an important source of data and knowledge for practitioners and academics and has promoted greater collaboration between them on peacemaking issues.
