Civil union in Liechtenstein

In December 2001, the FLay (a local organisation) and a local political party (Freie Liste) worked on a draft for a same-sex partnership law. The paper was accepted by the Liechtenstein parliament and given to the government to give a statement about it.

The law was scheduled for the second reading in the parliament. A proposed registered partnership bill was rejected by the parliament in 2003, with 10 votes in favor and 15 against. A motion put forward in the Landtag by Freie Liste requesting that the government introduce a registered partnership law similar to Switzerland's passed on 24 October 2007 with 19 out of 25 parliamentarians voting in favor. The penal code includes same-sex domestic partners in the definition of 'next of kin' for the purpose of the penal code.
