South Georgia College is a two-year, state-supported, residential junior college located in Douglas, Georgia, United States.

Affiliation/Accreditation

South Georgia College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award certificates and associate degrees.^{[citation needed]}

South Georgia College is also certified under the National League for Nursing and the Georgia Board of Nursing.^{[citation needed]} Students at SGC go on to four year institutions as SGC is a two-year residential college campus.

History

Created by an act of the Georgia Legislature on August 18, 1906 as the 11th District A & M School, it became Georgia's first state-supported two-year college in 1927. In 1932 South Georgia College emerged as one of the original 26 institutions of the University System of Georgia which traces its origins to the chartering of the University of Georgia in 1785. Joseph Meriwether Thrash (1885-1947) joined the faculty in 1907, and later served as the fifth principal of the A & M School. He became the college's first president in 1927.

South Georgia College is located in Douglas, Georgia, Population 11,413(2008). Douglas is in Coffee County Population of 40,242(2007).

Admissions Requirements

Prospective students must submit an application, high school transcript or GED scores and an immunization form. Depending on SAT/ACT scores and a high school transcript, students may be required to take the COMPASS Exam to determine the need for learning support.

Library

Holdings in the South Georgia College William S. Smith Library exceed 100,000 items, including reference books, bound periodicals, government documents, pamphlets, maps and videotapes. The library subscribes to 327 journals and ten newspapers. Back issues are available in a variety of formats: CD-ROM, paper, microfiche and microfilm. GALILEO (Georgia Library Learning Online, a statewide initiative) links SGC's library with others in Georgia to offer more than 100 generalized and specialized research databases. The reference area also offers CD-ROM based indexes to general periodicals and newspapers. Computer workstations offer access to the Internet through the campus network. Word-processing software is also available.

Faculty/Student Ratio and Average Enrollment

1:20. About half of all faculty members have Ph.D. degrees or equivalent.^{[citation needed]} There are no graduate assistants teaching classes at South Georgia College. Student enrollment is 1,500.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

South Georgia College's Financial Aid Office awards over $3 million in assistance every year. Seven out of 10 SGC students receive financial aid in the form of scholarships, grants, loans or through the federal work-study program.

South Georgia College offers several dozen merit-based scholarships through the South Georgia College Foundation. Many scholarships are merit-based, but others are granted depending on a student's financial situation. Applications for scholarships are available in the Office of College Relations.

Campus Housing for Students

South Georgia College offers the convenience and educational advantages of on-campus housing for students. In 2007, the college completed construction of Tiger Village, a modern 250-bed residence hall featuring two-room and four-room suites. The college provides 24-hour security and all the amenities for a supportive living and learning environment. Two-room semi-suites and four-room suites are available for $2050 per resident per semester. Prices are lower during the shortened summer terms.

All freshman and new campus residents are required to live on campus unless they:

1. are 21 years of age or older
2. have earned more than 30 credit hours
3. are married
4. are living with parents

Students living on-campus participate in the meal plan, and commuting students may also purchase a meal plan.

Athletics Intramural Sports and Recreation

Students may participate in intercollegiate men's baseball and soccer and women's softball and soccer. South Georgia College is a member of the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association and the National Junior College Athletic Association. Cross country track was added in 2008 as a club sport. SGC students may participate in flag football, basketball, and softball. Other activities include tennis, weightlifting, golf, table tennis, billiards, and volleyball. Fitness facilities at SGC include a softball field, soccer pitch, intramural flag football field, basketball court, Cook Field/Crider Stadium for baseball, indoor swimming pool, weight room, tennis courts, and a nine hole golf course.
