John Yap MLA is a member of the BC Liberal Party. Since 2005 John has sat in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Canada, for the riding of Richmond-Steveston. Born in Singapore, John immigrated as a teenager to Canada with his parents and moved into the Lower Mainland. For over the past two decades John has resided in Richmond.

in which he obtained a Bachelors of Science and then went on to complete a Masters of Business Administration. After graduation John went on to lead a successful twenty-year career with two major Canadian Financial Institutions, before deciding to enter the Provincial political arena.

On May 17 of 2005, in the 38th Provincial General Election, John was elected to serve his first term as MLA for the Richmond-Steveston riding, taking over the seat of the former Attorney General, Geoff Plant. John won a strong majority with over 59% of the popular vote and 6500 ballots more than his closest opponent.

Besides his government responsibilities, John is an active member of his community. He is a Rotarian, being a charter member and Past President of the Richmond Sunset Rotary Club. John is also an active member of the Gilmore Park United Church, where he has served as Board Chair, Finance Chair, Personnel Committee Chair, and Treasurer. John was a member of the Gilmore Park Project Group, which oversaw the development of a multi-million dollar church facility and 117 unit seniors’ retirement residence in West Richmond: the Gilmore Gardens Seniors Centre in which John served as Board Chair. John is also an honorary member of the Vancouver Diamond Lions Club and a member of the Mission Through Finance Committee of British Columbia Conference of the United Church of Canada. Lastly, John is also a past member of the Seniors Advisory Council of the City of Richmond.

In his leisure time, John enjoys spending time with family. John and his wife Suzanne have two teen-aged children. John is an avid reader, social golfer, and world traveler.
