Arafel

Arafel

Arafel: A Hebrew word (ערפל), meaning 'fog'; generally used in reference to the Apocalypse. Possibly derived from Exodus 13:21 *"The Lord preceded them... by means of a column of cloud to show them the way, and at night by means of a column of fire to give them light." or Job 22:13 *"And thou sayest: 'What doth God know? Can He judge through the dark cloud?"

This word is used in Frank Herbert's Dune universe in reference to the "end of the mankind" averted by Leto II's Golden Path. This can be interpreted as a reference to humanity's eventual extermination, or possibly the nature of finite systems within an infinite universe. Both are major themes within the series. In the subsequent books written by his son, Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson, Arafel is synonymous to Kralizec, Armageddon and Ragnarok, all of which refer to the oncoming final battle of humanity with the thinking machines.
