The Rational Lens

The Rational Lens is a symbol used to denote rationalism (belief in rational enquiry, scientific enquiry and curiosity about the natural world), consisting of a magnifying glass, the most basic tool of scientific investigation. The creator of wwww.effingtheineffable.com, Peter Magellan, proposed "The Rational Lens" in response to the less easily understood "Scarlet Letter" of Richard Dawkins' making. Little more than a stick crowned by a circle (note: this is just the template, far more elaborate versions can be used), it was created for 3 main reasons: firstly because the Scarlet Letter can be perceived as representing many different things (for instance, Aeronautical, a possible name for an aeronautics club), secondly The Scarlet Letter is rather hard to associate with Atheism (many people would not catch the reference) and third it pronounces what rationalists (a broader term than atheist) "are"-rational, not what they aren't-religious.
