Buffalo Bulls "The Buffalo Bulls football team is the football team representing the University at Buffalo. The Bulls play in the
Mid-American Conference , and are coached byTurner Gill .Team History
UB offered Football until 1970, and then reintroduced the sport in 1977. In 1994, the school made the jump to Division 1-AA, and in 1999, moved up to 1-A, now the Bowl Subdivision.
1999-Present: Division 1-A Football Bowl Subdivision
In 1999, the Bulls moved to their current conference, the
Mid-American Conference . They retained their head coach from their 1-AA seasons,Craig Cirbus . After a few years of dismal results, the team hiredJim Hofher from Division 1-AACornell University to be the head coach. However, Hofher's teams were marked by poor discipline and lack of effort, and won only 8 games during his five seasons at UB. During this time the Bulls earned two notable records. The first is the second longest losing streak in Division 1 history. The second record is the longest losing streak in Division history. In early December 2005, Hofher was replaced by
Green Bay Packers assistant coach and formerHeisman Trophy candidateTurner Gill . The formerNebraska University quarterback has led a remarkable turnaround very quickly, helping the team to a 2-10 (1-7) record in 2006 and a much better record 5-7 (5-3 MAC and divisional co-champions) in 2007, highlighted by their playing Big Ten powerhouse Penn State competitively for the first half (Penn State finished #25), even though they lost 45-24.The team continues to improve in 2008, with another competitive game against Missouri (then ranked #5 in the nation). For updates on the current team, see the link above.
