Maritime Foundation

The Maritime Foundation is the non-profit organization that created the American Merchant Mariners' Memorial located off the sea wall in Battery Park, Manhattan. It depicts three merchant seaman in a lifeboat, with one of them reaching into the water to save a drowning shipmate. It commemorates the heroic service of those merchant seaman who crewed the ships of World War II during unprecedented attacks by enemy submarines.

Every year since its dedication, commemorative ceremonies are held on National Maritime Day to remember all the American Merchant Mariners who have lost their lives at sea in service of their country from the American Revolutionary War to the present day.
