subdivision = See textGlycymerididae, previously known as Glycymeridae,
common names dog cockles or bittersweets, is a worldwide family of marinebivalve mollusk s, related to theark clam s. In this family the shell is generally round in outline, is slightly longer than it is wide, and the external ligament lacks transversestriation s. The shell in some genera is smooth and in others is ribbed.Taxonomy
The name of the family was originally Glycymeridae when it was established in 1916. The name comes from the
Ancient Greek word "glykymaris" (perhaps from "Glykys" (sweet) and "Meris" (part)), a word which is only recorded once in Greek literature. The family was changed, followingICZN rules of naming to the current name in 1957. This remains controversial, with each name supported by differenttaxonomist s, however the present name has become more widely used since 1969.
