Saulx-les-Chartreux is a Essonne département commune, in the southern suburbs of Paris, France. It is located 20 kilometers from the center of Paris.

History

The name of the city come from a tree : Saule "(willow tree)". Monks built a monastery in this village during the XI century, and lived there until the Religious War in 1592, when Condé soldiers came burn the place.

In July 11 1973, an air plane "(Boeing 707)" of Varig company crashed, just before his arriving in Orly airport, nearby the village : 124 people died, and 11 survived.
